Blue Origin’s Lunar Lander Mockup Is Ready for NASA Artemis Astronaut Training

July 23, 2026

Preparing astronauts for a mission to the Moon requires more than studying procedures in a classroom. Astronauts must practice working with the spacecraft they will eventually fly, learning how to operate systems, move through the vehicle, and respond to unexpected situations in an environment that closely resembles the real mission.

To support NASA’s Artemis program, Blue Origin developed a full-scale mockup of its lunar lander concept for astronaut training. The training hardware gives astronauts an opportunity to become familiar with the design and layout of the lander before they travel to the Moon.

Inside the mockup, astronauts can practice important mission activities, including entering and exiting the lander, moving around the spacecraft, operating equipment, and working through different mission scenarios. These exercises allow astronauts and engineers to identify potential challenges and improve procedures long before launch day.

Training with a physical mockup also helps NASA and Blue Origin evaluate how astronauts interact with the spacecraft. The experience can reveal opportunities to improve the placement of controls, equipment, work areas, and other systems that astronauts may need to access during a lunar mission.

As NASA prepares for the next generation of lunar exploration through Artemis, realistic training environments play a critical role in mission readiness. The Blue Origin lunar lander mockup provides astronauts with a tangible way to prepare for the challenges of operating on and around the Moon, bringing future human lunar exploration one step closer to reality.
